Vastu Purusha Mandala
Legend says Vastu Purusha, a cosmic being, lies face-down beneath every plot, his head in the North-East and feet in the South-West. The gods who pinned him down each rule one square of the grid.
The classic grid has 81 squares called padas. Brahma holds the nine at the centre, the Brahmasthan. Twelve inner deities surround him, and 32 guardian deities line the outer ring. Those 32 outer padas decide where a door is considered auspicious.

Which way to face
Head to South or East
South is best for deep sleep, East for students. Never sleep with your head to the North.
Face East
Stove in the South-East corner so the cook faces East. Sink and water away from the stove, ideally North-East of the kitchen.

Desk against the South or West wall. Keep your back to a solid wall, not a window or door.
Face North
North is linked to Kubera and wealth. Owners sit in the South-West of the office facing North or East.

Idols face West or South so you face East or North while praying.

Desk and cabin rules
A solid wall behind you
Everyone, especially the owner, should sit with a solid wall at their back. Never a window, door or open passage.
Never back to the door
Don't sit with your back to the main entrance. You should be able to see who comes in.
No beams overhead
Avoid sitting under an exposed beam. It's believed to create pressure and stress.
Rectangular desks
Square or rectangular wooden desks are best. Avoid round, triangular or irregular shapes for the main table.
Keep the centre open
The Brahmasthan of the office should be an open space, not a desk, pillar or storage.
Heavy files South-West
Keep heavy cabinets and records on the South and West walls, and the North-East light and clean.

Friday is ruled by Shukra (Venus), the planet of vehicles and comfort. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday are also good. Tuesday and Saturday are traditionally avoided.
Special days
Dhanteras, Akshaya Tritiya, Dussehra, Navratri, Gudi Padwa and Guru Pushya Yoga (Thursday + Pushya nakshatra) are considered very auspicious for new vehicles.
Periods to skip
Pitru Paksha (Shraddh), Amavasya, Rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi), Rahu Kaal, eclipse days, and in many regions Kharmas.
Good for vehicles
Ashwini, Rohini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Revati, and the three Uttara nakshatras.
After you buy
- Draw a swastik with kumkum on the front
- Tie a sacred thread (mauli) and offer flowers
- Break a coconut and roll the front wheel over a lemon
- Take the first drive to a temple

Check these before you buy land or a flat. Getting the basics right avoids costly changes later.
Good signs
- Square or rectangular plot, with length no more than twice the width
- Land slopes down toward North, East or North-East
- South-West corner is the highest, most solid part
- Roads on the North or East side
- An extended North-East corner
- More open space in the North and East than South and West
Warning signs
- Cut or missing North-East corner
- Extended South-West corner
- Triangular, L-shaped or irregular plots
- A road ending straight at your plot (T-junction, called veedhi shoola)
- Land sloping down toward the South-West
- Big trees, towers or poles right in front of the main door
For flats and apartments
Entrance first
The door of your flat matters more than the building's gate. North, East and North-East facing doors are preferred.
Balcony
Balconies in the North or East bring in morning light and are considered best.
Use your own centre
Apply the mandala to your flat's floor plan, not the whole building.
